Description
H.S. Mukthayakka is an important modern Kannada poet. Her writings show the influence of Vachana literature of medieval Kannada, Ghazals, modernism and the readers feel they are in the presence of a refined feminine sensibility.
Engagement with the ‘Other’ is one of the main themes of the poems in this collection. That ‘Other’ could be God, another human being, a companion or even the reader. ‘You’ in the title suggests the ‘Other’ without which life of individuals would be incomplete. Thus the poems in this collection would make the reader ponder and contemplate the various shades of meaning of each utterance. Mukthayakka has developed a lucid diction that is the result of clarity of thought. There is passion, thoughtfulness, contemplation, wonder, questioning throughout and each poem becomes an expression of a poignant moment of life.
No doubt, English has become the largest target language of translations and translation of poetry is a challenging job. Remarkably, The Sri Gururaj has captured the essence of Mukthayakka’s poems and rendered it with commendable ease in English. I only wish there would be more translators like him.
